 Víctor Goldgel Carballo (PhD, Hispanic Languages and Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley) is a Professor of Latin American literature at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of Cuando lo nuevo conquistó América. Prensa, moda y literatura en el siglo XIX (Buenos Aires: Siglo XXI, 2013), which won prizes for best book from the Latin American Studies Association and Casa de las Américas. His other publications engage with a wide range of topics, including piracy and slavery. A recipient of fellowships and grants from the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies, he is currently working on a book manuscript entitled Racial Doubt: Open Secrets, Fiction, and Slavery in Late-Colonial Cuba.
