Dr. Maria Elizabeth Peregrino Souto Maior Mendes is a postcolonial literary scholar and professor at the Department of Modern and Foreign Languages at Universidade Federal da Paraíba (UFPB), in Brazil. Her research interests include the relationships between motherhood and the motherland trope in African and Afro-Caribbean writings by women, trauma literature and postcolonial fiction by women writers in the diaspora. She is presently engaged in a research investigating narratives of political violence against women in the fiction of Edwidge Danticat and Jamaica Kincaid. Professor Souto Maior Mendes has recently co edited a special journal issue on Motherhood and Mothering ( Ártemis, Vol.31, n.1, 2021) together with Professor Danielle de Luna e Silva.
